Eli Lilly and Company was founded in 1876, and is now the 9th largest pharmaceutical company based an annual sales which were just under $20bn in 2009. Orginally from the USA, Lilly now operates in over 50 countries with just under 40,000 employees. Approximatly one fifth of these are dedicated to R&D. Its products are also marketed over a wide global market, covering 143 countries.

Their major recently produced products include Axiron (male hormone replacement therapy), Livalo (treatment for hyperlipidemaia) and Adcirca  (for pulmonary arterial hypertension). The main categories for therapeutic medications are cancer, cardiology/pulmonary, diabetes, men's health, fibromyalgia, growth disorders, neuroscience, osteoposisis and sepesis.
