Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting 100,000 young adults in the UK.

The condition results from autoimmune damage to myelin, causing interference in nerve signaling. Symptoms experienced depend on the part of the nervous system that is affected. MS can have a progressive pattern, or can have periods of relapse and remission.

There is little evidence for a genetic link with MS, but environmental factors may be important; MS is more common in areas further away from the equator, suggesting Vitamin D or a virus may be linked.

There is no cure for MS, but there is a lot of active research in the field.
