Lung cancer is the uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. Originating in the lungs, this growth may invade adjacent tissues and infiltrate beyond the lungs. Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and women, is responsible for 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually, as of 2004. The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, coughing (including coughing up blood), and weight loss.

The main types of lung cancer both originate from epithelial cells but can be small cell (respond well to chemotherapy or radiotherapy) or non-small cell (which respond better to surgery) carcinomas. Long-term exposure to tobacco smoke is the most common cause of lung cancers, but other causes include genetics and environmental factors. The overall five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 14%.
