Introduction

Manganese is the fifth most abundant metal found in the crust of the earth. Although 80 percent of manganese resources are found in South Africa, manganese is also mined in Australia, China, India, Ukraine, Brazil and Gabon. One of the South African mines along the Northern Cape is Tshipi é Ntle, a new open mine pit located within the Kalahari Manganese Field. The usage of manganese dates back to the Stone Age when manganese dioxide created the pigments used in cave paintings. Manganese is used in iron smelting and steel manufacturing processes as a key raw material to strengthen steel. As a result, global steel production levels largely determine demand for manganese, with China being the most significant buyer of the output from the Manganese increasing production and demand of the steel is expected to be the key growth driver for manganese during the period of study.


Geographically Asia-Pacific dominated global manganese mining market, due to largest crude steel producing capacity in the region with China, India and Japan leading global production. Asia-Pacific was followed by North America and Europe as second and third largest market for manganese mining. Asia Pacific is projected to have fastest growth, owing to rapidly increasing steel production and increasing demand of alkaline batteries in developing nations such as China, and India in this region. Amongst all major applications steel production is expected to witness highest growth during period of study.
