chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Therapeutics
Often under-diagnosed and under-treated, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is usually not diagnosed in patients until they incur significant lung damage. With approximately 15 to 20% of all smokers eventually developing COPD, there are over 26 million patients worldwide who suffer from the disease, yet, only about 600,000 are diagnosed each year. It is estimated that less than half of Americans with lung function impairment have been properly diagnosed. Primary care physicians are being encouraged to routinely perform spirometry tests on smokers older than 45 years, which will increase diagnosis rates and drive market growth through 2010.

Asthma Therapeutics
A common inflammatory disorder that causes narrowing and obstruction of the airways within the lungs, asthma affects over 20 million individuals in the US and over 60 million individuals worldwide. Current asthma treatments focus on either minimizing the inflammation associated with asthma attacks, or on rescuing the patient after an exacerbation has begun. The majority of the medications indicated for asthma are delivered directly into the lungs through the use of pulmonary delivery systems, such as metered dose inhalers (MDIs), dry powder inhalers (DPIs), and nebulizers.

Neurogenomics and Neurotherapeutic Strategies:
New Directions in Platforms, Targets, and Therapeutic Approaches

Deborah Janssen

CNS disorders affect a vast patient population and represent a huge area of unmet therapeutic need. In the United States alone, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) afflict more than 6.5 million people. Drug discovery efforts for the most prevalent CNS diseases have met with varying success; it is estimated that billions of dollars are spent every year on prescription drug sales, however, many current therapies merely treat the symptoms but do not provide cures.

2015: Strategic Considerations for the U.S. Pharmaceutical Industry
Ronald A. DeFelice, MBA, Ph.D., Clearview Limited
Contributing Editor: Sam C. Tetlow, MBA, Clearview Limited

The pharmaceutical industry thrives on innovative products and clinically differentiated medicines that can create real value. Innovation has the greatest impact on a pharmaceutical company’s long-term success, yet pressure to reduce drug prices from both government and consumers may force drug companies to seek alternative revenue streams. The pharmaceutical industry is in a constant state of flux, and it has never been more important for industry insiders to identify trends and anticipate outcomes.

Drug Eluting Stents Technology and Market Forecast
Latest research findings indicate that drug eluting stents (DES) reduce the need for re-intervention after PTCA to a greater extent than bare metal stents (BMS). The market for drug eluting stents has shown explosive growth since its inception and in 2004 it reached an estimated $4.2 billion in revenue worldwide.  Medtech Ventures' Drug Eluting Stents - Technology & Market Forecast report provide a brief, but thorough, analysis of this market with profiles of leading participants and forecasts to the year 2010.
