New Dermatology Management Reports: Psoriasis, Melanoma, Acne/Rosacea

  Acne & Rosacea Therapeutics
Over 85% of people worldwide suffer from acne (acne vulgaris) at some point in their lives. In the US alone, over 45 million have acne and 13 million have rosacea, generating demand for prescription strength therapeutics, in addition to popular over-the-counter formulations. Drug classes indicated for both acne and rosacea include anti-infectives, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories. Other classes indicated only for acne are hormone modifiers, keratolytics, and retinoids. Although many treatment options are available, even the most commonly prescribed topical therapeutics, like Adapalene for acne and Metronidazole for rosacea, result in adverse side effects like skin irritations, driving the need for improved treatments with higher efficacy levels and better safety profiles. With the time to market often shorter for dermatological products than for other therapeutic classes, ten emerging acne and rosacea therapies in phase II and III clinical development are expected to launch by 2009. Although the market is crowded by competition from generics and OTC preparations, new drug candidates including hormone therapies, anti-infectives, antibiotics, retinoids, and combination products will provide opportunities for smaller pharmaceuticals companies like Atrix, Cipher, and Connectics to gain market share from dominant players like Sanofi-Aventis, Galderma, and Roche.

Melanoma Therapeutics
Melanoma is the least common but most deadly of all skin cancers. With over 150,000 new cases of melanoma diagnosed each year worldwide, incidence levels are on the rise, especially in the US, where the fair-skinned and rising Sunbelt populations are at high risk for the disease. Current melanoma treatment classes include chemotherapeutics, such as antineoplastic agents, as well as immunotherapeutics, like immunomodulators and vaccines. However, even the most highly prescribed drugs, such as interferon alpha-2a and dacarbazine, have low efficacy ratings and high toxicity levels. As physicians prescribe more adjuvant therapies to complement surgical procedures, there exists a pressing need for novel treatments. Thirteen emerging therapies, many of them immunomodulators, are expected to enter the market by 2009. With their improved response rates and safety profiles, new drug candidates such as Peginterferon alpha-2b are projected to drive market growth significantly and capture greater market share. Emerging treatments are expected to be used as first line therapies over existing ones, led by vaccines such as M-Vax (Avax Technologies), Oncophage (Antigenics, Inc.), and CANVAXIN (CancerVax) that are already in late-stage clinical trials. Once granted unprecedented FDA approval, vaccines can potentially change the landscape of the melanoma therapeutics market.

Psoriasis Therapeutics
Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease that affects nearly 14 million people worldwide. In addition to physical and traumatic skin damage, psoriasis also causes psychological damage due to its appearance altering effects. Rather than providing a cure for disease sufferers, current psoriasis therapeutics treat merely disease symptoms with many of these drugs proving ineffective, unsafe, and incredibly costly. Among currently available therapeutics, topical corticosteroids and other topical dermatologics are prescribed as first line therapeutics for mild, moderate, and severe psoriasis, while retinoids, immunomodulators, and biologic immunosuppressives are used on- and off-label for the treatment of severe disease. Emerging therapeutics, such as new biologics and topical immunomodulators, will likely have major impacts on market growth with improved efficacy and safety profiles over existing therapeutics. With eight emerging therapies forecasted to enter the market by 2009, several companies such as Abbott and Amgen are positioned to capture and increase their market share.
