| Emerging Neuropathic Pain Therapeutics | ||
|
|
Currently, neuropathic
pain is managed through a combination of anticonvulsants, opioids, and
various antidepressants. Yet, most therapeutics available on the market
are not specifically indicated for neuropathic pain, and exhibit
inadequate efficacy and adverse events profile. Therefore, many
pharmaceutical companies recognize the opportunity to provide better
therapeutics and the subsequent market potential. With promising clinical
trial results, eleven emerging therapeutics will likely gain significant
market share between 2004 and 2009. 161

| Rheumatoid Arthritis | ||
|
|
With the worldwide
prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) estimated at more than 20 million
people in 2004 (based on U.S. Census Bureau data, World Health
Organization statistics, and epidemiology studies), there is increasing
demand for effective therapeutics to improve patient quality of life. At
present, there is no cure for RA. Historically, the goal of treatment has
been to provide pain relief, and slow disease progression. Patients with
joint pain usually try over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers and visit the
doctor only when the pain continues. The first line of treatment for RA is
the use of traditional analgesics while corticosteroids are very effective
in reducing inflammation. Second line treatments include disease-modifying
anti-rheumatoid drugs (DMARDs), such as methotrexate and biological
response modifiers are prescribed for patients experiencing severe RA
symptoms who have not responded to DMARDs. Because multiple classes of
medications are available, it is routine for physicians to make several
attempts before finding the appropriate treatment regimen for each
patient. Eight emerging therapeutics are forecasted to enter this segment
between 2004 and 2009. 235 pp. March

| Treatment Algorithms: Cancer Pain - Physician Awareness and Novel Drug Delivery Will Drive Market Opportunities | ||
|
Cancer pain can be
associated with the cancer itself or with conventional cancer treatments
such as chemotherapy or surgery, and it affects over 3 million people in
the US alone. Currently, there is a vast range of drugs used in the
treatment of cancer pain including opioids, NSAIDs, antidepressants and
anticonvulsants, yet most physicians consider morphine to be the current
gold standard.
Report Highlights Cancer pain affects over three million people in the US alone, yet despite the availability of a wide range of analgesics and published treatment guidelines, many patients still receive inadequate pain management Increased education and awareness of cancer pain and its management among physicians and patients is of critical importance in improving treatment outcomes Reasons to Purchase
